| Another day: Labor still failing NSW Police |

Shadow Minister for Police Mike Gallacher today said another day and more problems confront NSW Police because the Iemma-Costa Labor Government has failed to deliver resources for NSW Police. "Whether it's Highway Patrol Officers carrying out General Duties Policing or Volunteers in Policing carrying out sensitive police work, it all comes down to this Government's failure to employ enough officers," Mr Gallacher said.
"On today's allegations, the Labor Government must immediately reveal whether Volunteers in Policing are picking up the shortfall in General Duties Policing.
"Yesterday, Morris Iemma said Policing was not about numbers while John Watkins claimed that NSW had adequate Police.
"This attitude clearly demonstrates just how out of touch the Labor Government is with the workload of NSW Police and community expectations.
"Since 2003, Labor has cut 650 Police and NSW continues to lose Police, at about 60 a month.
"If these allegations that volunteers are carrying out sensitive police activities are correct the Police Minister John Watkins needs to provide answers urgently.
"Alarmingly, when confronted with these allegations, the Part-time Police Minister had little comment other than it was 'concerning'.
"The Labor Government is intending to abolish up to 300 administrative positions in stations across NSW, and it now seems they are intending to use volunteers to carry out highly sensitive Police work.
"This Government has had 12 years to ensure NSW Police have the resources to police the community and every day it is further revealed how this Government has failed," Mr Gallacher concluded. |
